EVIL DEAD
(1983) Star/Co-Executive Producer - New Line Cinema
A group of college kids unwittingly summon a
force of pure evil while vacationing in a remote cabin in the
woods. One by one, the group is possessed by this "evil
dead," with the exception of Ash (me) who ultimately becomes
the sole survivor of the ordeal. Not for the faint of heart.
GOING BACK
(1983) Star - Vestron Video
Two college grads have the summer of a lifetime
in rural Michigan only to find, several disillusioned years
later, that they cannot ever re-create those times, they can
never "go back."
CRIMEWAVE
(1985) Co-star/Co-Producer - Embassy Pictures
An idiot turns into the hero when the apple of
his eye is kidnapped by truly bizarre exterminators who
specialize in "exterminating" people. I played the
heel. The big shot Coen Brothers co-wrote this mini-epic.
THOU SHALL NOT KILL...EXCEPT (1985) Co-story/Voice work
Picture this: A hypothetical situation set in
1968 where the infamous Manson family runs up against 4
war-hardened marines. Fun for the whole "family."
EVIL DEAD 2
(1987) Star/Co-Producer - DEG
Ash meets new friends and battles old ones in
this sequel. Once again, Ash is the only survivor (duh...), only
this time he gets tossed back in time at the end...
INTRUDER
(1987) Cameo
Inspired by EDII Co-author Scott Spiegel's
years in a small grocery store, this happy tale revolves around a
crazed store manager terrorizing his co-workers on the night
shift. I'm a cop at the end with "Pulp Fiction"
producer Lawrence Bender.
MOONTRAP
(1988) Co-Star - Shapiro/Glickenhaus
Walter Koening (of Star Trek fame) and I are
astronauts who discover a mysterious object on the moon, which
turns out to be an alien robot bent on destroying the human race.
Walter and I journey back to the moon to find a way to stop it.
THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1988) Voice Replacement/Post-sound supervision
Zombies have overrun the world in this Super-8
(yes, 8mm) feature. A team of elite soldiers are out to send
these "un-dead" back to the grave. Gooey gore a go-go.
MANIAC COP
(1988) Star - Shapiro/Glickenhaus
A "maniac cop" is dead set for
revenge against those who wronged him. I play the good cop caught
up in the middle of it all. Don't you hate when that happens?
This was my first non-Detroit-based film role.
EASY WHEELS
(1989) Co-Executive Producer
A zany romp about biker chicks and biker guys
who find time for love while a whole lot of little babies are
getting kidnapped. Let's face it, it was way ahead of its time...
SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE IN RETREAT (1989) Co-star - Vestron
I play a Van Helsing-descended vampire hunter
who winds up in a town full of vampires who use sunscreen to
cheat death (well, second death, anyway). I get caught up in a
vampire civil war and wind up one of the vampires - man, does
that suck!
LUNATICS: A LOVE STORY (1989) Co-star/Producer - RCA/Columbia
An agoraphobic nut case (Ted "Joxer"
Raimi) gets a phone call from a jinxed nut case (Deborah Foreman)
when she dials the wrong number while running from muggers. Their
two nutty worlds come together and they fall in love. I like this
little film - one of the few truly independent ones I've been
involved in.
MANIAC COP 2
(1989) Co-Star - Shapiro/Glick
I reprise my character from the first film (for
about 10 minutes) as the maniac cop returns from the grave (or
box office take your pick) and wrecks havoc. Can you say
"franchise?"
DARKMAN
(1990) Cameo/Voice work - Universal
A scientist developing a new polymer skin gets
caught up in crooked politics. His lab is torched, and he's left
for dead. Although burned beyond recognition, the scientist (Liam
Neeson) vows vengeance and becomes Darkman, using his polymer
skin to create masks and disguises allowing him to infiltrate the
lairs of his enemies. Why am I telling you all this, I'm only in
the last shot!
MINDWARP
(1990) Star - RCA/Columbia
A post-apocalyptic "Jeremiah
Johnson." I play a wasteland-savvy rogue who helps out a
wayward "city" girl navigate through the
mutant-infested caverns of the future. Hey, I met my wife on this
one!
WAXWORK 2: LOST IN TIME (1991) Co-star
Zach Galligan journeys through parodies of
classic horror films trying to save his girlfriend. I play a
ghost-scientist with a Promethean complex in a vignette parodying
"The Haunting."
ARMY OF DARKNESS (1993) Star/Co-Producer - Universal
Ash winds up in ancient England to battle the
"medieval dead" once and for all, and screws up royally
along the way -- and no, there are no plans for a sequel. This
little baby ate up 2 years of my life.
THE HUDSUCKER PROXY (1994) Supporting - Warner Bros.
A zany Coen Bros/Sam Raimi fairy tale about a
bumbling idiot who rises to the top of the corporate world. I
played Smitty, a fast-talking, Lucky Strike-smoking newsroom
schmoe.
THE QUICK & THE DEAD (1994) Credited Cameo
Sharon Stone does her best Clint Eastwood. I do
my best at being cut out of the flick. (it's a long, boring
story)
CONGO
(1995) Supporting - Paramount
A group of scientists and mercenaries try to
find the remains of an ill-fated expedition (led by me) deep into
the jungles of the Congo. Enter gymnasts in gorilla costumes and
the fun begins!
FARGO
(1996) Cameo (un-credited)
The Coen Bros. film about an orchestrated
kidnapping/get-rich-quick-scheme which turns deadly in the
snow-covered landscapes of Wisconsin. My cameo is from a Detroit
soap opera from the early eighties called "Generations"
that the bad guys just happen to be watching. Hey, ya gotta get
into those Academy Award winning films any way ya can...
THE DEMOLITIONIST (1996) Cameo (un-credited)
Sci-Fi carnage and mayhem. I play a generic
henchman. The director, Bob Kurtzman, was an effects guy on the
last 2 "Evil Dead" pictures.
ESCAPE FROM L.A. (1996) Supporting - Paramount
In this sequel, I play the Surgeon General of
Beverly Hills who cuts people up ands uses their parts for my
twisted plastic surgery. Kurt was very cool.
HATRED OF A MINUTE (1996 Unscheduled release date) Consultant
Made by a young punk filmmaker in Detroit, this
heartwarming tale is a psychedelic thriller (now in
post-production) about a disturbed young man who murders women to
put them out of their "misery." 2 years in the making
and counting.
McHALE'S NAVY (1997) Supporting - Universal
I play Virgil, a skirt-chaser, in this
fun-for-all comedy about screwball sailors.
RUNNING TIME
(Unscheduled release date) Star - Panoramic Pictures
A gritty crime drama (in gritty Black and
White). I play an ex-con who sets out to rob the prison laundry
system where he worked for 5 years (while in the pen) and
re-capture his wasted youth in the process. This was cool to work
with fellow Detroit cohort, Josh Becker.
LA PATINOIRE
("The Ice Rink" 1997 - Unscheduled release date) Co-Star - Les
Films des Tournelles
My first international film. It's a French film
about the making of a movie about an ice rink. I played the
American actor who, in turn, plays the role of the goalie for a
Lithuanian-speaking hockey team.
DUSK TIL DAWN 2: TEXAS BLOOD MONEY (1998 - Direct-To-Video - March'99 release) Cameo -
Independent
I have a "teaser" role in one of the
two upcoming sequels to "From Dusk 'Til Dawn." It was
shot in Capetown, South Africa, and my old school pal, Scott
Speigel, directed it. I can't tell you much except that the
character I play pretty much gets the movie going.
ICEBREAKER (1998 - No release date yet) Star - Independent
I play an Alan
Rickman-ish bad guy in a "Die Hard-ish"
independent feature film. I hope it's good-ish.
